Golf History

The history of golf is dominated by one breed of golfer - the major champion. Throughout the long history of the game only players who have achieved victory in one of the 4 major championships can hope to achieve golfing greatness. Indeed only the relatively few multiple winners will become household names

In the age of the Tiger, the focus is now on Jack Nicklaus's all time record of 18 wins; how soon will this be surpassed? Yet, surely, players who have a mere 4 or 5 majors to their name will be remembered long into the history of the game.

Since the early days of the games evolvement in the 15th century to the modern day highly technological version, golfers of all ability from duffer to the professional have gleaned enjoyment from the joy and despair, in equal measure, obtained from playing the game. Its a simple enough proposition - get this ball into that hole using these clubs; yet no other pastime/game/sport (take your pick) can test your physical, metal, emotional and sometimes spiritual capacities to such extremes. Golf is a proactive occupation unlike most other sports which require reaction; the ball just sits there and waits for you to make a mistake.

Since the advent of television golf has become one of the biggest spectator sports; whether it be the avid fan tramping around rained sodden links for a brief glimpse of their favorite player or the sleepy eyed armchair viewer enjoying their annual session of The Masters; and although money rules the professional game it can still be enjoyed by anyone of virtually any age in the same way it was all those years ago.
